Understanding Your Medicare Options

There are a lot of options, the differences between them are not obvious, and the commercials are not exactly helpful. Most people end up picking a plan based on name recognition or what their neighbor chose, without ever checking whether it actually covers their doctors or their medications.

Understanding your options comes down to three main decisions: your plan type, your prescription drug coverage, and how all of it fits together. We keep it plain. No jargon.

Medicare Part D: Your Prescription Drug Coverage

Like Advantage and Supplement plans, Part D is administered by private insurance companies, and the plans vary considerably in which drugs they cover and at what cost.

If you choose a Medicare Supplement plan, you will need a separate standalone Part D plan. If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan, drug coverage is typically bundled in, though the list of covered drugs varies by plan.

Why your specific medications matter more than the plan name.

Not every Part D plan covers every drug, and what a plan charges for the same medication can differ significantly between plans. Before you select a plan, we review your current medication list and compare it across available Part D options to find the plan that covers your drugs at the most favorable cost. The federal Medicare.gov website has a drug plan finder tool that allows you to enter your medications and see your coverage options side by side. We walk clients through this tool as part of every consultation.

Why Star Ratings Matter More Than the Premium

A plan with a higher star rating is getting reimbursed at a higher rate by the federal government. That higher reimbursement gives the plan more resources to approve claims and deliver quality service. A plan with a low star rating is under financial pressure, and that pressure tends to show up in the form of more claim denials and more prior authorization requirements. A low-star plan is going to deny more claims. A high-star plan is going to approve more.

We factor star ratings into every plan comparison we do. A lower premium is not always the better deal when the plan behind it has a track record of denying claims.

The Benefits Most People Never Think to Check

Transportation to medical appointments. Meal delivery after a hospital stay. Gym memberships. Nurse hotlines available around the clock. These are real benefits that vary by plan, and most people do not know to look for them.

Part of our job is staying close to the market, talking with carrier representatives regularly, and knowing which plans are delivering for their members and which ones are tightening up. That kind of ground-level knowledge is something you can only get from someone actively working in this market, and it is exactly the kind of thing that separates a plan that looks good on paper from one that actually performs.

Questions We Hear All the Time

Original Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental, vision, and hearing coverage, though coverage levels vary. In Connecticut, Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed issue with no medical underwriting at any time, which gives residents added flexibility when comparing their options. If dental or vision coverage is a priority, we factor that into the comparison and look at whether it is better addressed through the plan or through a separate policy.

They are the same thing. Medigap is the common shorthand for Medicare Supplement insurance. The name refers to the idea that the plan fills the gaps in what Original Medicare covers.

That depends on which plan type you choose. Original Medicare and Supplement plans work with any provider who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans are network-based, so whether your specific doctor is covered depends on which plan you select and who participates in it. This is one of the first things we verify during a consultation.
